How to Make Tassels for Your Crochet Projects

How to Make Tassels for Your Crochet Projects

Although this isn’t exactly a crochet tutorial, learning how to make tassels will help you make your crochet projects even more beautiful. It took me a while to gain the courage to learn how to make tassels, and once I learned, I realized it was actually really easy! I have so many FOs (finished objects) that need all the tassels now.

You don’t need any special equipment or a tassel maker to follow this tutorial. You should be able to find all of the supplies around your house!

Whether you are working on a project that calls for tassels or you are making something of your own design with tassels, you have come to the right place. Let’s go ahead and learn how to make beautiful tassels.

Materials

  • Flat object the same size of the tassels you want to create. This can be a piece of cardboard, a small book, or anything else you think will work.
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Step 1

Wrap yarn around the cardboard or object with which you have decided to make your tassel

Continue wrapping until the tassel is as full as you want it to be (I used light weight (#3) yarn and wrapped it about 75 times around my cardboard).

To finish this part, cut the end of the yarn

Step 2

Remove yarn from object, keeping a hole in the center of the yarn

Step 3

Cut 2 pieces of yarn, about 2-3 times the length of the tassel

    Step 4

Thread one of the pieces of yarn in the center of your tassel and tie it tightly around the top

    Step 5

Tie the other piece of yarn about an inch below where you just tied the other piece. If you are making a smaller or larger tassel, use your judgement on where to place this piece.

Then, wrap the two ends of the piece of yarn you just tied on around itself as shown in photo. Tie loose ends and use your tapestry needle to weave them into the main part of the tassel to conceal the knot.

    Step 6

Brush out strands with your fingers then hold the ends between your fingers.

Then snip away the uneven ends to make a nice, even bottom to your tassel.
