Hey there, I'm Kailey! I learned to crochet from my grandma at only 5 years old.
But years later, when I tried to pick up my hook and yarn again, it felt like starting from zero.
I started crocheting again probably right where you are.
All of the stitches seemed foreign. I struggled to follow patterns. And I couldn't seem to get the yarn to do what I wanted it to.
Until I finally began to make a breakthrough.
I spent hours at a time finding answers to specific questions and wading through complicated patterns.
There were so many beautiful things that I wanted to make, but I would often get stuck at a confusing part and not know how to keep going.
A lot of times, I even had to "frog" (that means undo) a big chunk of my projects because I realized I had made a big mistake.
I got so frustrated that I just gave up on crocheting the things that I so badly wanted to make.
Instead of actually crocheting, I spent hours on Pinterest finding new patterns that I really wanted to make, but didn't know how.
I was stuck at home for the foreseeable future with not much to do other than go back to the crochet projects that I still hadn't finished.
But I still had a lot to learn.
With my free time, I started going to my grandma's virtual crochet group.
In the group, I was able to ask my questions and get them answered by experts who had been crocheting much longer than I had.
And, finally, I began making progress with my crocheting.
- The stitches that seemed so hard before, became second nature.
- I could finally work through confusing patterns for the first time.
- I got answers to the questions that were holding me back from crocheting the things that I wanted to.
I spent hours and hours trying to figure out how to crochet the things that I wanted. No matter how many YouTube videos I watched, I still couldn’t make sense of certain things that I was having issues with.
I didn’t think to ask my specific questions to people who actually knew what they were doing. This caused me so much wasted time and unnecessary frustration at not being able to make the progress that I wanted to make.
I thought that all yarn was the same when I first started crocheting again. Soon, I found out how wrong I was.
I wasted money buying the wrong yarn for the projects that I was working on. I also didn’t realize there were so many other things that you can use to make crocheting a project go much smoother. I often ended up being unhappy with my finished project because I hadn’t used the right materials.
I had no idea how to start a project correctly, how to count my stitches or my rows, how to start a new row and more.
All of these things added up to mistakes that sometimes ruined my entire project. I didn’t know the basic fundamentals of crocheting, and it cost me.
I had a big issue of crocheting my stitches too loose or too tight, because I didn’t understand what I was doing. I spent weeks on a beautiful scarf that ended up being child-sized, when I was trying to make it for myself. Other projects ended up being extremely uneven because my tension was all over the place.
I didn’t take the time to learn how to crochet with consistent tension and I wasted so much time and yarn, which resulted in wasted money.
The biggest learning curve for me was learning how to read a crochet pattern. I didn’t realize that you basically have to learn a new language to understand how to follow a pattern.
This took me a lot of time to figure out how to do, which meant I couldn’t make the projects that I wanted to make for a long time.
Because I didn’t understand what went into making certain projects, I would start things that I wasn’t ready for. My confidence took a huge hit when the unfinished projects started piling up and I had no hope for being able to finish them.
I didn’t realize that I had to build up the basic skills and get outside help before I could make some of the things that I really wanted to.
I had a huge pile of unfinished projects because I really didn’t have the skills or knowledge to finish them, and finish them well.
But I knew I had to keep going because I saw other people who were successfully making everything that they wanted to.
This time, I was going to take my failures and lessons learned the hard way and do things completely differently.
- No more making up my own way to do things.
- No more struggling to learn to crochet by myself.
- No more blindly starting projects without the right skills or materials.
I made a plan to learn everything I could about the things that had been holding me back from crocheting.
Pretty soon, I was finishing those projects that had once been too difficult.
Once I did that, I realized that I could move on to harder patterns and even start sharing my knowledge with others!
I began my own YouTube channel to teach the basics of crochet, because I knew how much I had struggled to learn from other confusing tutorials.
The way that experienced crocheters explain things is not always easy for beginners to understand.
But I understand the struggle of going from complete beginner to experienced crocheter, and I learned how to teach new crocheters in a way that is easy for them to understand.
I quickly gained subscribers with my YouTube channel and received hundreds of grateful comments from others who had tried to crochet before, but were left just as disappointed and confused as I had been.
Maybe you’ve seen beautiful crochet patterns that you would love to make but you don’t even know where to begin.
All of the terms seem really confusing and you feel like you could never make something that looks so complicated.
Perhaps you’ve tried to learn how to crochet on YouTube but you spend most of your time scrolling around and trying to find a tutorial that actually makes sense.
Maybe you’ve looked at a written crochet pattern and tried to make sense of it, but it all looked like a language that you couldn’t understand, so you weren’t able to make the project that you wanted to.
These things that seem like second nature to experienced crocheters really trip you up and you aren’t able to make progress because of them.
You might have a few loose stitches and overcorrect by making them too tight. Or you might have tried to make a blanket or a scarf and noticed each row became progressively smaller and smaller leaving you frustrated with a project that you spent hours working on.
You will gain access to 3 beginner-friendly patterns along with the following:
- A list of materials for each pattern
- Slow and detailed video tutorials for each step
- A written pattern
Each pattern is modern, visually appealing and is something that you can actually use.

One of the biggest assets of Modern Crochet Academy is the community that we will be building together! In my experience, crocheters are some of the nicest and most supportive people on the internet.
This community will be a positive and inclusive space where you can share your wins, get help with your problems and hopefully make connections with others who have similar interests to you.
At this time, Modern Crochet Academy is only geared toward those who are just beginning to learn how to crochet. I do hope to offer more intermediate and advanced patterns and techniques as time goes on.
However, if you are intermediate or advanced and want to see how you can be part of the community or be alerted when more advanced patterns become available, please email kailey@crochetunraveled.com.
My goal is to make learning how to crochet as easy as possible, and I will do everything I can to make it as such. However, you will still have to put in effort and do the “work” yourself to learn and practice this new skill.
This community will only be open to those who are kind and encouraging to others. All are welcome, as long as they are nice. Anyone who is rude or unkind to anyone, for any reason, will be removed from the membership.
Let’s make our corner of the internet the most fun and positive we can!
There will be detailed written and video instructions to help you complete each of the patterns provided in this course. The goal is for you to come away from with several finished projects that are attractive, modern and useful. You will also feel confident in your new-found ability to crochet!
As a member of Modern Crochet Academy, you will also have access to our private Facebook group. This is where you can share your progress and connect with other members. If you have any questions, you can post them here and I (or others in the group) will respond to them.
Don’t worry! I will provide a list of everything you will need to get started crocheting as well as a list of materials for each project. Many things can be ordered online or found in your local craft store. If you are on a budget or want to be more conscious of your eco-footprint, there are often craft supplies that can be found at secondhand stores.
Like any new skill, you are going to need to put the work in in order to learn how to crochet and that part is up to you. I will do as much as I can in order to help make it as easy as possible, but I will not provide a guarantee as each person’s abilities and willingness to put in the work is outside my control.
Please don’t. That is what I did, and it cost me tons of time and I was very frustrated (and almost gave up). Modern Crochet Academy takes into account each and every potential issue that new crocheters have and puts it all together in an easy-to-follow format. Not to mention, you can get your specific questions answered as they come up, so you are never stuck without a solution.
I make every single tutorial in both a right- and left-handed version, so everyone can easily learn!
