Half Double Crochet Front Loop Only Tutorial (Left-Handed)

Half Double Crochet Front Loop Only Tutorial (Left-Handed)

The Half Double Crochet Stitch in the Front Loop Only or HDC FLO (US terms) is a variation of the half double crochet stitch (HDC) with a small difference that we are going to learn about in this tutorial.

This stitch creates a nice textured look in your crochet that is similar to knit, which makes it great for anything like scarves, blankets and more.

This written tutorial will teach you how to crochet the Half Double Crochet Stitch in the Front Loop Only. I also have a right- and left-handed video tutorial of the Half Double Crochet Stitch in the Front Loop Only if that is easier for you.

Now that you’ve signed up for the Crochet Unraveled email list, let’s go ahead and get started with this mini interlocking block stitch tutorial!

To begin, follow what your pattern tells you to do. Or you can begin like I have in my example and start with a foundation row of half double crochet stitches.

One row of half double crochet stitches as the foundation for this example

Step 1: Start a new row by chaining 2 and turning

    Yarn over.

    Yarn over

    Pull through for first chain.

    Pull through for first chain

Yarn over to begin second chain.

Yarn over to begin second chain.
Pull through to finish second chain.

You should be left with one loop on your hook and ready to start your first half double crochet stitch in the front loop only
    Then turn your work.

    Step 2: Yarn over

Yarn over as your first step of the actual half double crochet stitch

Step 3: Insert your hook into the front loop of the desired stitch

To identify the front loop, please see the photo below. The front loop is the loop closest to you when you look at your work from the top view. If you want a more detailed explanation of the front and back loops, please take a look at my full tutorial on front and back loops in crochet.

Make sure that you are skipping the turning chain if this is the first stitch of the row as in my example.

Insert your hook under the front loop of the desired stitch, pointed out by the arrow in this image.
This photo shows how it should look to insert your hook into the front loop only of the desired stitch

    Step 4: Yarn over

Yarn over after inserting your hook in the front loop of the desired stitch.

Step 5: Pull up a loop.

There should now be 3 loops on your hook.

Pull up a loop. You should have 3 loops on your hook.

    Step 6: Yarn over

    Yarn over again

Step 7: Pull through all 3 loops on hook

This will finish the half double crochet stitch in the front loop only and you should be left with only one loop on your hook.

Pull through all 3 loops on your hook, leaving just one loop on your hook.
And that is how you do a half double crochet stitch in the front loop only!
