Why & How I Started Crocheting Again in my Twenties

I first learned how to crochet when I was about 5 years old. Perhaps much younger than many people, but I think it was perfect for me… someone who already had an affinity for making things with my hands from an early age. My grandmother, a lifelong crocheter, taught me and I had so much fun making things with her.

Unfortunately, I lost track of my love for making in general, not just crochet, through my teen and college years. I had always loved creating things but at that point in my life, I was more focused on school, competitive cheerleading, and working that I no longer spent time doing the things that I had once loved. My guess is that you can relate to this.

In early 2019, I found myself with some extra time in the evenings. I usually just filled that time with watching shows on Netflix and Hulu but I still had a desire to be productive. So, when I was scrolling through Pinterest one weekend, I decided to try and follow a pattern for an adorable stuffed cactus.

I didn’t have any idea about what the different hook or yarn sizes were for and I only had a vague memory of how to crochet in general, so I took to Google. It was clunky and slow, but I finally figured out how to do what I needed in order to make my cute little cactus. Although parts of it were definitely not perfect, from that point on, I was ‘hooked.’

Not only did I fall in love with crochet, it helped to rekindle an amazing relationship with my grandmother. We now text and FaceTime all the time to talk about our projects! I have even joined her crochet group that meets once a week over Zoom.

Whether you already crochet or you are looking to learn, I really think that it is such an amazing craft. What you can make with crochet is absolutely endless. There are so many beautiful stitches and not to mention the beautiful people who are a part of the online and real life crochet community.

I still have that cactus sitting on my desk to remind me of where I started and how much rediscovering crochet has changed my life. It’s the one thing that I feel that I can do every single day and never get bored. On the contrary, the more I make, the more ideas I have and I get even more excited to just keep making!
