Step 1: Insert your Hook in the Correct Stitch

First, you will need to identify the stitch into which you are going to make the single crochet then insert your hook into that stitch. This stitch will likely be in a foundation chain, if this is the beginning of a project.

Step 2: Yarn Over

After hook is inserted in chain, this image shows the yarn over

To yarn over, wrap the yarn from the far side of the hook to the close side (the side facing you).

    Step 3: Pull Through

Pull the loop up through the stitch so there are two loops on the hook

While keeping the yarn over loop that you just made on your hook, pull your hook back through the stitch into which you inserted it in step 1. At this point, there should be 2 loops on your hook.

    Step 4: Yarn Over

Second yarn over of the single crochet

As in Step 2, bring the yarn from the far side of the hook to the side facing you.

Step 5: Pull Through 2 Loops on Hook

Pull through the two loops on the hook to complete the single crochet

Lastly, while keeping the new yarn over loop on your crochet hook, pull through the first two loops on your hook. You will now be left with only one loop on your hook. At this point you can move on to the next stitch!

If you have completed a row of stitches and are now going to go back the other direction with more single crochet stitches, here’s how to get that row started.

    • Chain 1
    • Turn your work so you can crochet the other way down the row
    • Now start your next single crochet in the last single crochet of the previous row. Be sure that you don’t do a stitch in the chain that you just crocheted.

Now that you’ve completed this easy single crochet tutorial, you have a solid foundation for learning more complex crochet stitches.
