How to Make a Slip Knot for Crochet – Quick & Easy Tutorial

If you want to start crocheting, this is exactly where you need to begin! This tutorial will teach you how to make a slip knot, which is how you will start many crochet projects.

What is a slip knot?

A slip knot is the loop that you put over your crochet hook to begin your crochet project.

When to use a slip knot:

Slip knots are used to start projects that are crocheted in rows. This is how you will begin your project and know that you have a secure knot to keep your work from unraveling for years to come.

Do you have to use a slip knot?

The only time you would not use a slip knot is when crocheting in the round. In that case, you would use a magic circle instead. In most patterns, if it does not indicate how to start the project, you should default to starting with a slip knot.

If you are a beginner crocheter, I would suggest you learn how to make a slip knot first and then you can learn the magic circle (tutorial coming soon).
